Jim Aitchison is a composer and artist, working both in the realm of responding to visual artworks and in making visual responses to music. He studied composition at Nottingham University in the early 1990s with James Fulkerson and Nicholas Sackman. From 2000, a move to Cornwall brought a life changing encounter with the artists of the St Ives School and a decades long interest in exploring correspondences between music and art was born. The first fruit of this was a composition for solo piano after art by Sir Terry Frost following a meeting with the artist just before his death in 2003, which was premiered in 2005 by Andrew Russo at the at the Fort Worth Modern Art Museum, Dallas, for the Van Cliburn ‘Modern at the Modern’ concert series.
